I had never experienced Chicago before, and traveling with Ethan felt completely different from being in the office. He appeared more relaxed, occasionally stealing glances in my direction. We were immersed in hours of interactions with influential figures from the architecture industry, and every time he introduced me as his fiancée, an exhilarating urge to giggle overwhelmed me.

Taking one last glimpse at my reflection in the full-length mirror of the hotel room, I marveled at the choice I had made for the evening's social event. A stunning floor-length dress in a vibrant shade of royal blue adorned my figure. Accompanied by Lizzie during our shopping spree, I was assured that I looked the part. The dress boasted intricate beading along the neckline and sleeves, with delicate lace that displayed such elegance.

With my hair luxuriously curled and cascading over my shoulders, I contemplated whether a touch more lipstick would complete my ensemble. Grasping the tube from the vanity table, the sound of a brisk knock at the door startled me. To my surprise, I jumped, inadvertently sending every makeup item tumbling to the floor, including my curling iron that almost landed on my thigh.

"Oh, Alexa! Are you alright?" Ethan's concerned voice boomed from behind the door.

I bit my lower lip and quickly fell to my knees, gathering the fallen items.

"Yes! Yes, I'll be out in a minute!" I yelled back, my heart pounding.

"We're late!"

"Just give me a minute, Ethan!"

Without much thought, I hastily placed the makeup items back on the vanity table. We had opted for separate rooms and Ethan's room was conveniently located next to mine. Rising to my feet, I stole one more glance in the mirror and let out a frustrated groan. I had unintentionally smudged my lipstick in the process. Great! I considered wiping it all off, but instead, I opted for quick retouches, hoping I didn't end up looking like a vampire. I hurriedly grabbed my clutch and rushed to the door.

As I turned the knob, my eyes caught sight of Ethan, leaning casually against the wall, his arms crossed over his chest. He was dressed in his usual impeccable black tuxedo, accentuated by his signature gold watch. He bore a slightly bored expression on his face, and I swallowed nervously.

He lifted his head, and his piercing blue eyes locked with mine. "We're late," he stated firmly.

"I'm sorry. You look great." I managed to smile, attempting to ease the tension.

He raised an eyebrow in response. "Let's go, Alexa."

I hurried after him, extending my hand to interlock our fingers. "Don't forget, we're a couple," I whispered playfully into his ear.

"Yeah, remind me," he groaned, intertwining his fingers with mine.

I chuckled as we made our way to a Porsche waiting outside the hotel’s lobby. Ethan continuously checked his watch, clearly despising the idea of arriving late, while I took the opportunity to enjoy the captivating city of Chicago. Every time I accompanied Ethan to an event, it felt like stepping into his world anew.

Despite having attended a few gatherings with him, I could never quite get used to it.
